Children...

I don't want them to grow up too quickly and miss what being young and carefree is all about.
I want them to enjoy it all. But being their mom, I want to be part of their enjoyment too...So far so good.

The Night Invader!

My chickens have been found out. A large greedy fox has invaded my space and eaten two of my girls and it really has pissed me off. I have one lonely girl wondering around the garden looking for her mates and it's very sad.

I saw the fox as well. He was rather healthy looking but if I see him again, that could change. I am taking the dogs up to the run and letting them pee all around the fence to try to put off the invader. I'm sure he'll try again but I have a surprise for him if he does. I have just spent two hours rewiring the whole run with really sharp chicken wire. I am now wearing band-aides like a 5 year old. The stuff is sharp.

The chickens haven't been the only problem on the homestead. Honey bees swarmed in my bedroom the other afternoon. Not fun. Creepy really. I had to find out how they were coming in and duct tape the whole. Crafty buggers. They have been living peacefully in the rafters outside our bedroom window for more then 15 years and have never invaded our space before. But for some reason, the other day they did. They got through the brick and made their way between the plaster board and the wall and crept out into the room along a beam. The wall doesn't look very pretty all duct taped but it will have to do until the pest control man comes on Monday morning to sort them out. I don't want to have to do it but now they have become dangerous. I ended up vacuuming up 159 sleepy bees. I did kindly let them free into the garden and then ran away fast.

I've thought about bee keeping as a hobby but now I'm not so sure.

Can I say a thank you to Michelloui, London City Mum and Selina for being supportive. You all are very kind and I am going to keep blogging. I really do enjoy the writing and so that is what I am going to do. I'm going to try to be more consistent as well. I think a bit of routine in my life would be a good thing.

  1. I know how you feel about the pesky fox killing your girls. I had 3 ducklings who were taken one night, and a fox left a trail of death and gore another night when 8 of my hens were savaged. It was heartbreaking and gruesome, even though it is nature.

  2. You're very brave! I have an absolute phobia about wasps and so bees freak me out a litte bit too although I try to be compassionate about their decline. Still, seeing them in my bedroom would send me screaming to the hills !!
Good for you deciding to continue with the blog. I for one am very happy. Like you, I too will endeavour to be more consistent with my writing as I have neglected my poor little blog recently !

  3. Mother Hen, I can sympathise. Foxey Loxey came calling on me a few days ago too. Colin the Cockerel and Mavis the hen have both gone to that great chickencoop in the sky and that just days after Dilly, my favourite hen, died too. Glad to see you stuck with the blog x

  4. Foxes, Bees - egad! the country is a dangerous place to be! Years ago we had a swarm of bees move into our attic at my parents house. We had to get the exterminator in but they warned they would be back. And so every five years or so a new queen and her minions comes round to set up house. They are pesky. I hope the fox doesn't come back. And keep writing. Your blog is highly entertaining!
