Children...

I don't want them to grow up too quickly and miss what being young and carefree is all about.
I want them to enjoy it all. But being their mom, I want to be part of their enjoyment too...So far so good.

It's All About The Tree

Your tree might be wild and wacky or more traditional.

Which ever way you choose to decorate your Christmas tree, have fun doing it.
Don't fret, panic or get tied in knots. It's once a year and only with you for a few weeks at most. Once a few presents are under it and the lights get turned on, every Christmas tree becomes beautiful.

I'm living with Christmas trees at the moment. It's a 9-5, 7 days a week job up until Christmas Eve. I look at a lot of trees and hear a lot of stories about peoples tree habits.

Some people come as couples and whisper and touch gently, choosing delicately. They are sweet and giggle a bit. They choose in about 15-20 minutes, looking at maybe three different trees.

Some people come by themselves, usually the wife, and she hums and ha's, hands on hips, looking critical because she is the one who will be looking at it everyday until it gets taken down and chucked on the bonfire. She looks at maybe eight different trees and can take up to half hour to pick one tree.

The well married couple that comes are pleasant, aren't really paying attention to the trees that we are showing them until they spot the tree being showed to another person then they instantly want that tree! Pleasant couple becomes competitive couple. They start following other people around and watch as trees are brought out and displayed. When one tree is discarded, they swoop and buy. We are happy to see them go.

The man comes. He is husband, he has instructions, he has a measuring tape! He doesn't need our help and he will take it with him; no delivering. We like him.

The woman in Gucci boots comes in. We all hide. She will want to look at all the trees that are over 9 feet tall. She will want it perfect and will make us dig through a pile of wet, freshly cut trees forever until she gets just the right one. She will complain about the mud in the yard, the pine needles clinging to her trouser bottoms, the cold, the fact that her gardener will make a mess putting it in her house even though her cleaning lady will be the one sweeping up the needles. She will decorate the lower branches and have staff to do the higher ones. She will want it delivered yesterday.

The families are the funniest. They all want different trees, different sizes and shapes and are super critical of each others choices. They all say 'no' to mom's choice. They have a warm drink and look at decorations and stands and lights and all agree on a big wreath for the door with a red ribbon. They have a nice time and usually leave, having bought two trees. Even if they want the trees delivered by the weekend, they had a good time and the fun rubs off on us and we are happy to oblige.

The couple that fight. They have brought their troubles with them and have no qualms about public displays of...non-adoration. There is a lot of finger pointing and jabs about mother in-laws, egg nog consumption and dirty dishes. They often want a large tree, a status symbol to their fained happiness perhaps. Sometimes we give them a strip of ribbon and send them out into the tree plantation by themselves to sort it all out. They come back half an hour later, visibly relieved, having picked the perfect tree and settled their marital life for the moment. We wave them off, forgetting the public tiff but expecting our driver to get  tip when he delivers their tree two days later.

The very best is the eight second picker. She comes in has a quick scan of the trees, points to the first tree in the line, rips off the tag, pays and bam, done and dusted. We net it load it and she's off. And we're on to the next one.

Maybe it is all bout the tree. It sets the mood. It enlightens us for the holiday.

Happy holidays everyone.

Tis the Season

Tis the season to be... too old to stay up till the wee hours partying. Sleep is power to me and I need it! Though I love a good party especially when we throw it.
So, I can get a bit glum pre Christmas and all the shopping in the world doesn't seem to bring me out of it. So pretty much I have finished all the present shopping and still feel unsatisfied. Not that the chicks won't love what they get. They will if they know what's good for them. But I feel like something is missing.
My ipod only plays Christmas carols this time of year and the house has the lights adorning the front door. The candles have gone from cream to red in all the holders on the table and still the spirit hasn't hit me yet.
Pre exam-mocks time. yuck. I am one of those hens that really feels for her chicks when they are under pressure. I do more then half the worring for them. Another reason I need my sleep! I personally work well under pressure but don't like my chicks to have to. Boys especially seem to be incredibly passe about these things. Lucky to have such a care free life. I did have a lovely conversation with the Boy recently though and he seemed to think that it was okay for me to worry and care about him. He said he actually didn't mind if I took an interest in his teenage life. What a sport! I feel lucky. Though I do wish I could get into the Christmas Spirit.

Fall As You May

I love the Fall. I love the leaves on the trees, it's like a bowl of American cereal, Fruit Loops, when I look out my windows. And I love it when all the leaves come down and my Rooster rakes them all up. What a good boy really. It is our least favourite job in the garden. The stragglers are hanging on now and the trees just look sad but it is still really pretty out there.
Halloween was a blast. A few trick or treaters but that wasn't the aim of the night. How to feed a group of your best friends who came dressed up to the nines as witches and devils, only orange food through three courses. Pomegranate champagne, salmon starters, orange chicken curry and pumpkin pie. I had to throw in a few extra colours for variety but it all turned out great. The rooster and I have a friend who is a maker of fine chocolate. She produces extraordinary and yummy chocs. She supplied me with oranges dipped in dark chocolate and chili chocolates to die for. What a clever girl.
I also love November. I am one of those people who enjoy the luxury of home internet shopping and am quite happy to sit up at odd hours and Christmas shop on line. I work all of November and December so it is my best option unless I start shopping in August. I have been known to do this. My little chick is like me and she browses sites from her Blackberry  then emails me wish lists. She starts her lists in August too, the ones for herself. She doesn't let me have any fun in just finding lovely things to buy her because I want to. This year I have swarn will be different. I am ignoring her requests which could make for a very heated Christmas morning. We'll see. The boys are worse though. There is just nothing clever and fun for a boy. Practical yes but they only need so many nose hair clippers and navy socks. They will get the latest xbox kill and destroy game though. That will keep them quiet at least while the turkey is roasting.
Bloody timer on the washing machine is dinging and won't quit until I go open the door. Time to be the mother hen again. Chickens love rooting around in all the mud in their pen at the moment, filthy eggs though.

Smooth Summer

There are definitely days that run smoother then others.
I was at work yesterday for a few hours, by myself and feeling very self employed though I am not.
It's a Christmas business and though Christmas is months away still, it does tend to creep up on me pretty quick.
It might only be July 1st but then it's August and then October!
September flys by so quickly that I don't usually see it.
Christmas on the internet is a new concept for me but I like it.
I love the internet.
Shopping from my kitchen table has never been so good.
A cup of tea, the weekend paper, and tapping away on a a key board.
It's a nice time out for me when I can get it.
I do love the actually shops but it's finding the time to get to them.
Living in the country sometimes means no easy access to the high life of retail therapy.
So there I was at work doing inventory on the computer with the stock for company.
I had the doors wide open so I could see the blue sky and sunshine even though I wasn't out in it.
In walks a friend to say hello.
She strolled around the place having a peek but couldn't get her head around all the baubles and ornaments.
So much green, red glitter (I go home covered in it most days), Santa's and snowmen.
I don't see it like that though.
It's stock to me.
When I start to put pieces together for people and start to spread the Christmas 'joy', then it becomes something else -magic.
It also becomes something else entirely when it is freezing outside and I'm dressed in twenty layers of clothes and my hands are numb.
Hard work.
Doing the inventory was a lovely mindless job that went very smoothly.
If it's done now then maybe I'll see a bit of September after all.

So the 4th of July is  days away and I had big plans for the family.
BBQ picnic with invited friends, a band in the park playing, flags  flying, badminton and frisbee, cold beers and bugs.
Then I remember that I live in England and none of my 4th of July dream happens here.
Well, maybe the BBQ will happen as I do tend to cook meat out doors more so then not.

The Chicks and I are off to The States soon for a bit of a holiday.
Beach, sun, seafood, salt water, fresh water, fun, fun, fun, and bugs.
Can't wait. The days always run smoothly there.

Starting to have to give eggs away to the neighbours as the girls are laying regularly now.
I've also started to collect egg recipes to cook but my little chicks don't really like to have egg in every meal, humm.
Not running so smoothly.
